Why 3? It's a Magic Number.
Three is a Magic Number according to SchoolHouse Rock! which first aired in 1973. Research has shown that our brains find it much easier to grasp and remember 3's.. As a child, everything we did and learned seemed to be centered around 3 — A,B,C; 1,2,3; Three blind mice and so on. As we explored colors, we learned that the three primary colors; red, yellow and blue with which it is possible to obtain all colors. In science, we learned that three kingdoms embrace our ideas of matter--mineral, vegetable, and animal.
As we continued in our education, those of us who spent time in geometry, might remember that a triangle is the most stable shape. This is why bridges and building that need to carry a lot of weight have structural elements based on triangles. And, when some of us took overnight outdoor trips, we may have learned to triangulate our position so we didn't get lost. We picked 3 points approximately 120 degrees apart to fix our position. If you studied an instrument or sang in choir, you learned that the third note of every scale provides the most basic harmony that pleases the human ear.
Photographers, artists, and designers learn the rule of thirds. An educated photographer tries to place the horizon line of their photograph one-third from the top or one-third from the bottom and not in the middle (where amateurs often place it). So, our world is captured uniquely in thirds.
So, it is quite natural that the three of 3 Outcomes evolved in the process of consulting with business executives using the SMART Outcome Elicitation system during implementation and strategy sessions.
Want to experience the magic of 3? Just let us know. We would love us our system to help you.
